Since the late 1960s, the Gilded Age Wattles Mansion has been owned by the city of Los Angeles, but in recent decades, funds for its proper upkeep dwindled significantly, and time was taking a toll. Rather than let the landmark property continue its slide into dilapidation, last year, the city’s Department of Recreation and Parks reached out to the local design community, who performed much needed restoration on the home in the process of making it a temporary design showcase.
Built in 1907 by Myron Hunt and Elmer Grey, architects of the Huntington Library, the Rose Bowl, and Mount Wilson’s Observatory, the Mission Revival-style mansion occupies a sprawling lot of nearly 50 acres below Runyon Canyon.
The only remaining example of an estate built in Hollywood prior to the film industry, the Wattles house has just unveiled its second design showcase, which now seems set to be an annual event.
Whereas last year’s showcase had an Old Hollywood theme, this year’s focus is on sensitively decorating a historic home while taking modern tastes into account. Donated improvements this year include new tile, sinks, plants, and landscaping.

THANK YOU - Premiere Props for hosting February GMM In spite of inclement California weather, Premiere Props opened their doors wide in welcome on February 16th as the longtime SDSA Business members hosted their first ever SDSA General Membership Meeting. Dicky Broussard and son Matt welcomed the large SDSA group who would not be daunted by the start of what would be a series of storms hitting the Los Angeles area.
The 13,000 sq ft prop rental house carries thousands of items including many incredible western antiques, vintage nautical, 19th century case pieces, and unique finds including large cannons for period military dramas! Need a 8' polar bear? Yes, they have that too! There is so much to find within their warehouse on Sheldon Street and members had a great time discovering pieces they had not yet seen!
Meanwhile, machines dispensing frozen margaritas whirled as attendees munched from a sizzling taco cart serving street tacos and enchiladas. Everyone enjoyed a prop cooler that was fully stocked with fun desserts, a choice of ice cream bars and tasty frozen treats.
After Matt Broussard introduced aspects of the wide-ranging prophouse, SDSA President Shirley Starks and Chairman of the Board Philip Hoffman thanked all members for donating canned food for our first food drive assisting Hope of the Valley food bank and welcomed new members...

The Art Directors Guild and Set Decorators Society of America held their joint annual Holiday Celebration on December 10th at the LA Mart Design Center in Downtown Los Angeles. Once again the event was a lavish visual feast reminiscent of a winter pageant.
Guests arrived under the banner announcing welcome from hosts LA Mart Design Center and Bassman Blaine and through the balloon art Candy Cane Land created by balloon artists Aah Inspiring Balloons.
Attendees were serenaded by a group of Victorian street carolers before going downstairs through an assortment of balloons, also by Aah Inspiring Balloons, to find a cluster of happy inflatables provided by Frost and then encountering a determined group of garden gnome elves wanting to find an outlet for their light display and swipe some Michter’s American Whiskey. Passing a trio of snowmen, with a fourth a slightly outcast, as RC Vintage/Alley Cats’ life-sized Apollo Astronaut among the traditional snowman family.
Green Set's oversized toy soldiers stood sentry along the red-carpeted aisle of the central party area, with DJ Autumn on the decks, spinning Christmas cheer. Lux Lounge EFR’s beautiful and varied seating included freeform modern purple velvet benches with floating Sputnik chandeliers from Practical Props, tufted red Victorian splendor and sleek navy blue retro modern couches--with bars hosted by EC Prop Rentals, Nest Prop Rentals and Faux Library Studio Props. The three bars poured the popular Tito’s Handmade Vodka, Be Tini low calorie mixed drinks, the provocatively bottled Teaz Vodka, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, creamy RumChata and the retro chic Pabst Blue Ribbon Beer. Also poured during the event were two purpose-driven beverages: Fireman’s Brew Beer and Gold Star Vodka, both spirits founded on giving back, with percentages of purchase going to firemen’s funds for Fireman’s Brew and to veteran’s organizations from Goldstar Vodka. Libations provided by Placed4Success Product Placement, ISS, Hollywood International Placements and Front Row Media.
The area was voluminously draped by Dazian and spectacularly lit by Foreman and Associates. Floral centerpieces and arrangements by Sandy Rose Floral enlivened LA Party Rents supplied tabletops with elegant holiday gaiety, some tables sporting the addition of a fur-trimmed gloved-hand sculpture holding an umbrella-cum-Christmas tree. The stunning hands were designed and donated by Mannequin Gallery. A non-traditional Santa Claus allowed folks to sit on his lap, whether naughty or nice.
Guests munched on catering specialties by City Palate Catering as well as Tosi Health “Superbites” nutrition snacks. Of course, the dazzling display of home baked cookies was a popular spot as well with holiday art blowups provided by Artists Right Society held tight in sculpted foam snow banks lining the walls.
Galleries also lined the outer area, with vignettes of seating areas as themed lounges. The Bassman Blaine lounge hosted the Michter’s Whiskey tasting bar, Palecek studio provided the foosball table, FormDecor hosted the Astek Raffle Board, and Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams presented the piano lounge with Hollywood Piano Company tickling the ivories all night long in the glam retreat. And all around contributions from History for Hire, Advanced Liquidators Office Furniture, U-Frame-It Gallery and Ob•jects shone with the glow of the holidays.
The Society of St Vincent de Paul Los Angeles assisted in much trucking and transpo for the event, then, in the true spirit of Christmas, the SDSA had the privilege of sharing a bit
of this wondrous décor with 1,500 children a week later at the St Vincent de Paul annual food, shoes and toys giveaway, creating a grand atmosphere while Santa handed out toys to local children.

Warner Bros Property Department hosted the November General Membership Meeting on November 10th, just ahead of the swirl of holiday twisters swallowing up everyone until January. The Set Decorators Society of America has scheduled the November GMM early in the month for just that purpose for the past few years with great success.
Robert Greenfield, Director of Warner Bros Property, and Amy Hilker, WBSFMarketing, pulled off another lovely, fun and crowded evening oftasty nibbles, full bar and a decadent dessert table for attendees to enjoy while getting the latest trend info and industry news from one another. Tours of the prop house also kept guests moving throughout the event location. Charcuterie and crudettes platters were set from the loading dock to the parking lot at "The Collection" entrance allowing guests to go the full length of the space, taking in the amazing set decorations and props on the bottom floor of the historical studio prop house which has been in operation for over 80 years. Guests also toured the other 4 floors of the 200,000 sqft treasure trove of items, from new and modern pieces to furnishings still in use from Hollywood's Golden Age!
As usual, SDSA President Shirley Starks and SDSA Chairman of the Board Philip Hoffmanled the meeting with the mixture of serious news and bonhomie. Starks called up members of the assembled group to pull winning door prize tickets. And those lucky door prize winners took home gifts provided by hosts Warner Bros Property and SDSA Business Members International Promotions with Cameron Hughes wines, Bassman Blain and Hollywood International Placements, as well as the huge floral centerpieces provided by Sandy Rose Floral Inc.
Aah Inspiring Balloons again created eye catching balloon columns to highlight the path to the loading dock.
Festivities went late into the evening as the many attendees stayed to "hang out" as the Warner Bros prop house has become such a familiar
and comfortable spot for working set decorators that it just feels like home.

RIP Jeannie Gunn SDSA Jeannie Gunn, a dedicated leader of the SDSA for many years, passed away on December 28th, 2016
Jeannie (Jeanette) Minitello Laughlin Gunn was born into the business. A native Californian, she graduated early from North Hollywood High, attended Arizona State University and Otis Parsons Art Institute, traveled to fascinating places, and lived in Okinawa for three years during the Vietnam War. But her bloodline held true, and her father introduced her to the property department at MGM in 1979.
Soon after, she was working as a lead person at Lorimar with Set Decorators Robert (Bob) Benton and Barbara Krieger (TWILIGHT ZONE: THE MOVIE), officially becoming a set decorator in 1981 when a non-union film she was working on “flipped” and signed the union contract.
Gunn’s six years on CAGNEY & LACEY shaped a new standard of realism in episodic television. Twenty years later, she and Production Designer Aaron Osborne broke new ground on the cutting-edge WITHOUT A TRACE—the duo was awarded an Emmy in 2003 for their work on the critically acclaimed series. Gunn also received an Emmy Nomination, with Production Designer Dean Edward Mitzner, for the pilot of the artistic sci-fi THE FLASH.
Gunn’s oeuvre also helped define the look of contemporary decades: the 1990s, with FALCON CREST, DARK SHADOWS and seven years of HOME IMPROVEMENT; the 1980s of PERFECT STRANGERS and made-for-television film THE THERESA SALDANA STORY; the palette and lines of the beginning of the 21st century in V.I.P. and THE SHIELD, along with features KISS, KISS, BANG, BANG and EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH. Numerous other television and film characters and environments were enhanced by Gunn’s work from the late ‘70s through 2007’s TWELVE MILES OF BAD ROAD, for which she shared duties with her close friend, the late Set Decorator Leslie Frankenheimer SDSA.
Personal commitment to the betterment of her craft and community led Gunn to take leadership roles in the SDSA, the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and IATSE Local 44 on behalf of set decorators and their profession. She served as Governor to the Television Academy of Arts & Sciences, representing the Art Directors/Set Decorators Peer Group, a position she held for four years. She was then elected by the Governors to serve on the Executive Board of the Academy, as well as Chair of the Board for the SDSA and a Trustee of IATSE Local 44.
Quietly sophisticated, known for deep understanding and clarity, calmness, a wry sense of humor and an ability to mediate, Jeannie Gunn was recognized in 2010 with the Set Decorators Society of America’s highest honor, the Earl Cooperman Lifetime Achievement Award.

LESLIE FRANKENHEIMER SCHOLARSHIP
The Set Decorators Society of America is offering two $2500 scholarships in memory of SDSA Set Decorator and SDSA Community Outreach Co-chair Emeritus, Leslie Frankenheimer, as part of its community outreach program.
In memory of Set Decorator member LESLIE FRANKENHEIMER, the Set Decorators Society of America Community Outreach Committee is establishing two annual scholarship funds in the amount of $2,500.00 each. Lennie Marvin’s Prop Heaven and Faux Library Studio Rentals are graciously donating the funds.
The scholarship is being offered to all members in good standing of the Set Decorators Society of America and Local 44 Set Decorators, Buyers, Lead Persons and Crew Members supporting the SDSA.
This offer is also extended to the children, dependents, spouses and domestic partners of SDSA and Local 44 members in good standing. Anyone wishing to be considered for this award may download the application forms for the 2017 - 2018 academic years from the SDSA Website at www.setdecorators.org.
Through acts of goodwill and charity, the Community Outreach Committee supports the SDSA in its efforts to promote education and the invaluable contribution of the Set Decorator's craft. This scholarship is open to qualified applicants.
Lennie Marvin’s Prop Heaven and Faux Library Studio Rentals are each underwriting a complete scholarship award.

Notification of the scholarship award will be prior to the 2017 Set Decorators Society of America Annual Awards Luncheon.

Halloween came early to the SDSA as Dapper Cadaver hosted an October 13th General Membership Meeting at the San Fernando Road via New Orleans showroom and warehouse.
The ever-expanding Death, Science and Halloween themed prop house was all decked out for the spooky New Orleans- themed event, from voodoo priests to gator infested swamps to spicy jambalaya. BJ & Eileen Winslow sure do know how to set an atmosphere.
The jambalaya and other NoLa specialties were cooked up by the famous Little Jewel of New Orleans, while Mr. Bartender mixed up craft cocktails with Tito’s Handmade Vodka provided by Placed4Success Product Placement. Other SDSA Business Members setting a spooky tone to the party were:
Sandy Rose Floral, Inc spreading funereal cheer throughout the building with black and blue rose displays in loving cups, epergne, goblets and other unexpected vessels
LA Party Rents providing appropriate seating and tables and equipment for the theme
Aah Inspiring Balloons girding the entrance with their balloon marker towers
Hollywood International Placements supplying door prizes of Rumchata beverage with a set of two Costa Boda stemmed glasses. Very nice.
SDSA members showed up in costumes in the theme: zombies, voodoo man, witch doctor, even a life sized voodoo doll. Ron V Franco won the costume contest as a burlap life-sized voodoo doll, with Set Decorator Laura Richarz as Set Dec Zombie, Sandy Rose Floral’s Corri Levelle as Zombie Florist and Student Member Kristen Madrigal as Zombie Woman, complete with bone-lined fascinator. Other attendees donned non-zombie attire, including April Glover as a Pirate and SDSA Executive Director as a medieval king complete with antique Moroccan tunic from Badia Designs.
SDSA President Shirley Starks and SDSA Chairman of the Board Philip Hoffman conducted the meeting of news, events and achievements for the SDSA and members while standing among coffins, ancient Egyptian statues, mummies and torture chamber devices. Such a display should keep any crowd in good behavior.

RIP Joe Armetta Retired Set Decorator and former SDSA Set Decorator Member Joe Armetta
passed away peacefully October 22nd at his home in the Valley.
Born December 2nd 1942 in Old Baltimore MD, Joe was often credited as Joseph A Armetta on the television shows he decorated, some of which are now iconic or cult television favorites, including the pilot episode of HILL STREET BLUESfor which Joe received an Emmy Award nomination. Among other shows Armetta decorated are CHARLIE’S ANGELS, THE LOVE BOAT, FALCON CREST, HOTEL, LIVING SINGLE and TAXI, as well as the fan fave miniseriesDARK SECRET OF HARVEST HOME.
A very charming fellow, Joe was welcomed around the industry prop houses, where he took interest in the lives of the staff while having long chats over a myriad of topics which did not include set decoration. He was well known for his love and advocacy for animals, often keeping a menagerie of adopted pets in his care while finding homes for others.
A memmorial celebration of joe's life was held on November 19th, and was attended by many friiends and colleauges.
Joe’s own furry companions will need homes now,

Brand new prop house Picture Start Props hosted the August 18th SDSA General Membership Meeting in North Hollywood.
The eclectic and diverse prop house, owned and operated by husband and wife duo Dan Butts and Jennifer Fitzgerald, opened their doors to the SDSA even before their post-Labor Day offical opening.
Now opened and fully operational, located at 7040 Laurel Canyon Boulevard in the 91605 of North Hollywood, Picture Start Props* is a small but well-stocked boutique prop house with a great assortment of items curated and purchased with a professional eye given Butts’s many years as a well-known Production Designer and Art Director.
Outfitted for a proper premiere with a red-carpeted Step and Repeat walkway entrance, the event had props and set dressing displayed in a mixture of eras and styles, with an emphasis on mid-century.design. The space is packed tight with treasures, but is easily shoppable with stock ranging from elegant to funky.
An assortment of tasty tray-passed nibbles were part of the victuals provided by City Palate Catering who also provided their signature charcuterie and cheese display and individual chocolate mousse and strawberry shortcake desserts. Good food is always an asset to a party, and guests wandered through the new prop house not knowing what they might find, whether unique furnishings or tasty morsels.
The meeting was conducted from behind a curved desk with SDSA President Shirley Starks and Chairman of the Board Philip Hoffman looking like the local news team delivering information about newsletter The BUZZ, current SET DECOR articles, Emmy voting, upcoming events and new members. They also announced door prize winners from behind the news desk!
Orly Nail Care through Tami Glenn and Hollywood International Placements provided the door prizes.

The July General Membership Meeting of the Set Decorators Society of America was hosted by prop house Little Bohemia Rentals at their recently expanded North Hollywood facility.
Just opened in January of 2016, LBR has already expanded and is fast becoming known as a tasty prop house of nicely curated items to finish off a set with great character. Owned by husband and wife Chris Coles, a respected set decorator known mostly for commercials and Rachel Sardi Coles, a former set dec buyer who now runs the eclectically elegant prop house
Little Bohemia Rentals also showed they know how to throw a party, casting a Moroccan theme, engaging luxury tenting Business Member Raj Tents to tent the parking lot in ivory, gold and pink flowing thematic tenting. Catering company City Palate Catering was once again at an SDSA event, providing spiced lamb sliders, Moroccan chicken skewers, stuffed grape leaves among other tray-passed nibbles and a Middle Eastern/North African influenced charcuterie table, all washed down with soft drinks and beer. Some attendees showed up in Kaftans!
The evening was spent among the interesting and unique objects of the prophouse while the business portion of the meeting congratulated this years plentiful SDSA Emmy Award nominees and announced a fantastic discount program for SDSA Members at Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles.

Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams hosted the Set Decorators Society of America’s June 16th General Membership Meeting at their recently opened showroom located in the Glendale Galleria. The SDSA wishes to extend thanks to the Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams Company along with showroom Manager Michelle Yoo and Designer William Foster for hosting the luxurious event.
Founded in 1989, Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams has grown to an internationally-acclaimed home furnishings company known for fine upholstery, tables and case goods, as well as accessories including lighting and artwork, all importantly eco-friendly and American-made. With the growing chain of Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams Signature Stores, the Glendale location will serve as the flagship film and studio store.
SDSA Members and guest strolled among the exclusive furnishings in the 9,000 square foot showroom while nibbling on tasty morsels provided by celebrity culinarian, Chef Lovely, whose savories and sweets from her Lovely Eats kitchen are indeed lovely. Members sipped champagne and minted water while seated on elegant vignettes featuring sofas and chairs in the classic, contemporary and modern styles Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams is widely known for, while showing, to quote their book The Comfortable Home, “How to invest in your nest and live well for less.”
SDSA Business Members assisted our hosts with Sandy Rose Floral, Inc supplying floral arrangements of unique colossal dahlias throughout the showroom, while Seven Colonial provided door prizes from their online catalogue of accessories and Hollywood International Placements provided products from the Tosi Health System. Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams also provided door prizes of agate bookends and faceted crystal orb paperweights.

The SDSA extends a hearty ‘”Thank You!” to Danica Derpic and her team at D2 Art and Sarah Whipple and her crew at Modern Resale for hosting the May 19th SDSA General Membership Meeting.
It was dual hosting duties for the two companies that share space on Jefferson Boulevard. A clever plan has D2 Art adorning the walls while Modern Resale’s furnishings fill the floor, a smart joining of two businesses providing an expanded inventory of fine art and contemporary luxury furniture available for TV and film production.
A cool May evening of catching up with pals in the warehouse space filled with curated items of classic authorized design furniture and artwork used not only for film but for corporate offices and private collectors. Elegant nibbles were provided by City Palate Catering, Placed4Success Product Placement provided drinks.
New Business Members where introduced, including two new art options 1421 Art and Pacific Coast Art who were on hand to tell the crowd about their own businesses.

The Set Decorators Society of America announces sad news of the passing of former SDSA Business Member and longtime friend Phil Torf. Phil was a fixture of the SDSA with his generational family-owned company House of Props, from their joining the SDSA in 1994 until the elegant, eclectic collection of extraordinarily unique treasures ceased operations in late 2013.
We extend sympathy to Phil’s family, friends and colleagues.

November 21, 1922 - April 27, 2016 Phillip Maurice Torf, age 93, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, April 27th, at his home in Beverly Hills, surrounded by his wife, Millicent and his two daughters, Bonnie Rose and Victoria Torf.
Phil Torf was born in Los Angeles on November 21, 1922, the son of Jude Torf and Elizabeth Bloom. He grew up in Eagle Rock and graduated from Eagle Rock High School in 1940. After attending Fresno State, he graduated in 1944 from the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, Long Island, New York, and served as a merchant mariner in the Pacific during World War II.
He returned to Los Angeles after the war, where he soon met the love of his life and married Millicent Owen in 1950. Phil worked as a manufacturers' representative in the toy business for many years and later owned House of Props - a classic Hollywood prop house on Gower Street, originally established in 1948 by his uncle, Alexander Torf. He was a dedicated member of the American Legion and the Freemasons. He also served as president of the Los Angeles-Long Beach chapter of the USMMA Alumni foundation, and was well known for his dedication for recruiting cadets from Los Angeles-area high schools to the Merchant Marine Academy.
Phil is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Millicent Owen Torf; his two daughters, Bonnie Rose and Victoria Torf, both of Ventura; three granddaughters, Jennifer Rose Alexander of Thousand Oaks, Melanie Rose of Ojai, and Brooke Elizabeth Ezra Torf-Fulton of San Francisco; and one great-grandson, Bodhi Kai Rose Alexander of Thousand Oaks.
His funeral was held at Hillside Memorial Park and Cemetery in Los Angeles on Sunday, May 1st.
Bassman Blaine hosted the March General Membership Meeting at their newly renovated LA Mart showroom.
On Thursday March 10th, SDSA members drove under the signature giant chair at the LA Mart/The Reef then proceeded to the building's 10th floor to find the recently renovated and expanded 15,000 square feet Bassman Blaine showroom featuring an elegant and eclectic comprehensive, cohesive and on-trend line package ranging from classic traditional to cutting-edge contemporary. Bassman Blaine’s complete range of home furnishings includes custom upholstery, area rugs, case goods, lighting, artwork and accessories available immediately from the floor.
Roger Morton, Nancy Hoffberg and Alex Lachuga, the team at Bassman Blaine provided trays of cheese and crackers, fresh fruit and sushi for a light but satisfying nosh for attendees as they wandered through the extensive collection.
SDSA President Shirley Starks ran the meeting, giving out the latest news and info for the Annual Awards Luncheon and other events on the horizon, while wrapping previous events and welcoming new members. SDSA Chairman Phil Hoffman announced the sad news of the closing of Stat’s stores in the Southland and discussed the invaluable volunteerism of SDSA committees.

Set Decorators Society of America To Honor Anne McCulley at 23rd Annual Awards Luncheon
The Set Decorators Society of America (SDSA) will honor Emmy Award-winning set decorator Anne McCulley with the Earl Cooperman Lifetime Achievement Award during its 23rd annual awards luncheon on April 10. The luncheon honors SDSA members who have contributed to the art and craft of set decoration. The event will take place at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel and includes the popular raffle and art auction, the latter of which will benefit the charity Inner City Arts.
A Tennessee native, McCulley began her career in the Universal Studios prop department in the early 1970s. Facing challenges common to women at the time, she worked her way to being hired as the first female leadperson for the television series Columbo under set decorator and mentor Jerry Adams. She became the first woman to emerge as a set decorator from the property department for the TV series Kojak. McCulley went on to win an Emmy Award for outstanding art direction or scenic design for a dramatic special for ABC’s Eleanor and Franklin: The White House Years, shared with production designer Jan Scott. Her continued work in television earned her four more Emmy nominations.
Moving from television to film throughout her career, Airplane! was McCulley’s first feature film as a set decorator. Her career flourished with acclaimed films including Nine To Five, Purple Rain, Silverado, Ruthless People, Nuts, The War Of The Roses, Antwone Fisher, National Treasure and Alvin And The Chipmunks.
She is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, the Television Academy and the American Society of Interior Designers.
SDSA members donate their original works of art for the popular SDSA art auction. This year’s auction will benefit Inner-City Arts. A special section of the auction, the Kate Sheeley Outreach, benefits the Motion Picture Television Fund.
Valda Lake opened the doors for another Wallspace event, this time a
Set Decorators Society of America General Membership Meeting on February 25th at the La Brea Avenue hip art Gallery.
Lake and her crew, including Gallery Director Randell Baltazar and Albert Hernandez, gave attendees a great night with an open bar and yummy foods catered by Chef Taji Marie, winner of Food Network’s CHOPPED and owner of Simple Gourmet, who produced spread as beautiful as it was delicious.
Lake does everything first class, including filling her gallery with art covering a range of styles from urban, street, and pop to modern contemporary abstract and showing the art hanging “Salon” style, on 14’ walls floor to ceiling.

Valda Lake SDSA is a well known Set Decorator for commercials and started wallspace, with the lowercase “w” online to help her and other decorators acquire cleared artwork quickly and easily, but success and growth brought a capitol “W” and a store front space as Wallspace opened in 2012 as a gallery at 607 N La Brea Avenue, showcasing both emerging and established artists, most from the Los Angeles art scene.
All art is has permission by the artists for use in motion pictures, TV and commercials for short and long term rentals. Art is also available for purchase.

On Valentines Day, Modernism Week gave film and television aficionados in Palm Springs one more reason to fall in love
with set décor and design: the Hollywood Designs on TV & Film panel.
Presented by WestEdge Design Fair and the Set Decorators Society of America (SDSA),
the chat recalled iconic sets in the modern style, shed light on the collaborative process,
and inspired a full house at the Modernism Week CAMP Theater.

Noted author and design journalist Cathy Whitlock led a conversation with Ellen Brill SDSA, Emmy Award® nominated set decorator of shows including AMERICAN HORROR STORY and NIP/TUCK, and Jeannine Oppewall, Academy Award® nominated production designer of films including L.A. CONFIDENTIAL and CATCH ME IF YOU CAN. They shared often-humorous anecdotes about what it took to create the environments of beloved films and TV shows. The discussion centered on a retrospective of their work and how collaborations result in what Oppewall referred to as “a team product”.
“I am responsible for all of the environments of any given film,” she proffered in describing what a production designer does. “Anything an actor sits on, puts his feet on, drives through, touches, picks up; that’s what Ellen and I do. We take responsibility for everything on every physical environment of a set.” She added that she is responsible for building and designing the set when a proper location is not found. In discussing her work, Oppewall detailed her process and resources for narrative storytelling, resulting in the set revealing much about the character.
Both Brill and Oppewall look for serious drama, whether translated through stunning architecture or an outstanding piece of furniture that is true to the script and informs character. For Brill, it starts at the blueprint as the production designer’s plan informs her decorating choices. In collaborating with a set decorator, Oppewall, too, noted the importance of communication. “You have to feel an intuition, you have to be in sync with the material, and you have to have a sense of humor at least to be around me,” she quipped.
Moderator Whitlock posed the question, “Does Hollywood set the trends or do the trends come first and then we follow?” Brill recalled director Ryan Murphy wanting to have stylized, iconic furniture on the set of NIP/TUCK. In 2005, when the series began, the mid-century look was just starting to come back into vogue, so needed pieces were hard to find. Repeatedly, the solution was to find and restore antique furnishings. The opposite could be said 2001: A SPACE ODDESEY, a film that inspired much modernist décor and for which pieces were custom made. Either way, the Hollywood influence is undeniable.

Society of St. Vincent de Paul of Los Angeles hosted a wonderful party and general membership meeting for all members of the SDSA! Those of us who arrived early were able to shop "VIP" with an additional 20% discount. Many unique and wonderful finds were discovered!
Attendees were taken through tours of the working complex and were shown an informational video allowing then to understand the remarkable impact The Society of St Vincent de Paul has on the local area and beyond. David Fields, Laura Salazar and Alfred Rodriquez of SVDPLA kept guest busy with the tours and purchase checkout while Chris Sariego snapped pictures of the members and guest discovering that The Society of St Vincent de Paul Los Angeles is so much more than just a thrift shop.
The Set Decorators Society of America (SDSA) will take their expert knowledge of mid-century art and design to Palm Springs' annual Modernism Week this February. Modernism Week is an all-encompassing celebration, punctuated with a modernism show and sale, films, lectures, signature home tours, modern garden tours and much more.
Partnering with WestEdge Design Fair, the Santa Monica-based event that will occur November 3-6, 2016, SDSA will present a panel entitled Hollywood Designs on TV & Film. The panel will take place on February 14, 2016 from 1pm – 3pm and will focus on the ways set decoration and design in film and television have had an influence on American style.
Jeannine Oppewall, production designer of Academy Award® nominated films including LA Confidential and The Good Shepherd and Ellen Brill SDSA, set decorator of Emmy Award® nominated TV shows including American Horror Story and Nip/Tuck, will participate in a conversation moderated by interior designer and noted author on style and design, Cathy Whitlock. The panel will reveal their key influences, anecdotes and inspirations as well as exploring Hollywood’s continuing contributions to modern style.
A champagne reception and book signing of Cathy Whitlock’s “Designs On Film” will immediately follow the panel in the Elle Décor Lounge, giving attendees a meet and greet opportunity with the panelists.
Writer-director Quentin Tarantino reinvents the American Western in his latest movie, The Hateful Eight. Set after the end of the Civil War, the film finds a cast of colorful characters—including former Union major Marquis Warren (Samuel L. Jackson), fugitive Daisy Domergue (Jennifer Jason Leigh), bounty hunter John Ruth (Kurt Russell), and Southern renegade Chris Mannix (Walton Goggins)—stranded under one roof with four mysterious strangers during a blizzard. The majority of the story takes place inside Minnie’s Haberdashery, a stopover in Wyoming for stagecoaches making their way through the mountains. Tarantino turned to production designer Yohei Taneda, who created the House of the Blue Leaves in Kill Bill: Vol. 1, to bring Minnie’s to life and create a richly layered and visually interesting backdrop both indoors and out.
In this scene at Minnie’s, Ruth and Domergue meet hangman Oswaldo Mobray (Tim Roth). Taneda and set decorator Rosemary Brandenburg added period props to the interior, creating a compelling, intimate atmosphere. Tarantino shot The Hateful Eight in Ultra Panavision 70, a 70mm format that was last used in 1966, and the director has said that the wide format brings intensity to the film’s interiors.

Some 1,000 Children In Need Weren't Left Behind This Christmas When Elves Gave Away Toys, Food And Shoes During This Festive Event At St. Vincent de Paul of Los Angeles (photo courtesy of SVdPLA)
The Society of St. Vincent de Paul of Los Angeles and the California Highway Patrol teamed up for the 27th Annual CHiPs For Kids Toy Giveaway for needy children on Saturday, December 12, 2015. While police and community tensions have run high this year, local CHP officers wanted to remind Angelenos that they care deeply about the community they serve, especially during the holidays when all families should have food on the table and presents under the tree.
“We want kids to know that police officers aren’t the enemy,” said CHP Public Information Officer Edgar Figueroa, a sworn police officer. “We would much rather save a life, keep our community safe and bring happy smiles to children this holiday season.”
This year, families lined up around the block to receive toys, food and shoes for this holiday season. Approximately 951 toys, and 951 pairs of shoes were distributed to families, as well as 500 bags of food. It was a festive holiday event, and the Set Decorators Society of America attended the event and decorated the St. Vincent de Paul of Los Angeles Thrift Store windows and created a winter wonderland that would rival any major department store, including an actual sleigh for kids to sit on and a gigantic mailbox that accepted letters for Santa Claus.
The event could not have happened without the generous support and donations of the CHP, CBS/KCAL, Shoe Palace, Allen Lund Trucking, Navidad En El Barrio and the Set Decorators Society of America.
An arty thank you is in order to Claudia Deutsch and the team at Artspace Warehouse for hosting the SDSA’s November General Membership Meeting with style at the Beverly Boulevard gallery.
Having previously hosted the SDSA 20th Anniversary Party in January of 2013, Claudia knew just how to entertain the SDSA Membership. Attendees sipped champagne while viewing the fantastic art and mingling with friends and cohorts before the start of the busy holiday season.

Owners BJ and Eileen Winslow opened their death-related, scientific, horror and Halloween props and décor shop for the October GMM on October 8th.
Started less than five years ago, BJ and Eileen have gone from a garage full of creepy stuff to an extensive line of props and set decorations for dressing supernatural, crime, medical, mortuary, morgue, cemetery, laboratory, apothecary, Halloween party, haunted house and so much more. They have also recently opened the Creatures & Cultures division with Natural History Museum housed in the same San Fernando Road warehouse as the Dapper Cadaver stock.
Guests were encouraged to wear costumes and many obliged, but for those without costumes the SDSA offered an array of decorated masks, and amusing fascinators for folks to don for the fun evening of cocktails with Tito’s Handmade Vodka, Bi Tini low-calorie cocktails and Fireman’s Brew beers all provided by Placed4Success Product Placement.
Fresh sandwiches and flaky popovers gave attendees proper sustenance, but the devilish lure of a decadent dessert bar, offering colorful dipped Oreo pops, mini cupcakes with brightly colored frosting and marshmallow and chocolate push ups, was a call very few could deny. The selections displayed on a real Autopsy Morgue table did not deter!
A few lucky winners received door prizes donated by Placed4Success Product Placement, Seven Colonial and Board Chairman Phil Hoffman through the Yankee Candle Company.

Thank you to Advanced Liquidators Office Furniture for hosting an amazing Emmy Party. Mark, Eric and Jerry Goldman along with their crew including Joe Navarro, Julie Shepherd & Lazaro Diaz, hosted a fabulous fete.
Guests were greeted by a pair of bathing beauties standing by History for Hire’s vintage woodie station wagon decked out with picnic supplies for a day at the beach including crates of Moet & Chandon champagne. Moving under balloon waves created by Aah Inspiring Balloons, a trim and tanned merman dispensed puka shell and shark tooth necklaces as guests entered a sea of umbrellas and Raj Tents pergola tents in various shades of blue beach waters.
Bruce’s Catering opened the party with tray-passed nibbles before setting out a seaside-style dinner buffet, while attendees sipped cocktails from Michter’s American Whiskey, Tito’s Handmade Vodka, Ole Smokey Moonshine, Be Tini low-calorie cocktails and Fireman’s Brew Beers.
The program featured the awarding of raffle prizes and heartfelt speeches from the Emmy Award nominees in the four Art Direction/Set Decoration categories.
It was a fantastic evening all around!

Set Decorator Beauchamp Fontaine SDSA is known in the industry for her use of color and period detail, whether with famed film director Terrence Malick on KNIGHT OF CUPS or any one of a number of national commercials, one can count on her unerring eye for giving just what the scene needs. Having decorated such diverse projects as the swinging 1960’s with THE PLAYBOY CLUB, the rocking 1970’s with “THE RUNAWAYS, the gritty southern swamplands of MUD and the world of high tech magic in NOW YOU SEE ME, Beauchamp recently spent the first season of GRACE AND FRANKIE putting together several spectacular sets for the Lily Tomlin/Jane Fonda comedy from one of episodic TV's hottest new platforms, Netflix. But it seems it is the beautiful beachhouse that brings out a covetous chord in many.

The SDSA would like to say a hearty Irish inspired “Go raibh maith agat” to Tess Casey and Aisling Flowers Studio...for those who don’t know, Aisling is pronounced “ash-ling” and is an Irish word for vision or dream...the visionary Tess opened her West 28th Street doors to host the SDSA for a casually elegant event.

The SDSA would like to thank ZG04 Décor and owner Klaus Hasmanm for the splendid General Membership Meeting on June 25th at their Case Avenue showroom. ZG04 Décor is a rather new prop house nestled among other SDSA Business Members along busy Case Avenue in North Hollywood, surronded by History for Hire, Pinacoteca and Alley Cats.
The prop house is filled with eclectic and elegant set dressing from furniture to exquisite one-of-a-kind accessories, including some holdover items from the former Zeitgeist Props, Hasmann’s previous prop house of sophisticated furnishings.
SDSA Members arrived to tasty appetizers and cold drinks on a warm June night, and as they viewed the considerable stock, Hasmann revealed that the less than two-years-old business is quickly outgrowing its 12,000-sqr. ft. home.

Always a leader in contemporary and upscale furnishings as well as some original pieces ob•jects is a founding Business Member of the SDSA, moved to the valley at the end of 2013, according to Vice President and General Manager Fred Arens, as he humorously recounted the journey from small storefront shop through the expansion and location changes throughout the years. President and Creative Director Tom Bugenhagen also addressed the crowd as he did in back in 1992 when ob•jects hosted the first ever SDSA General Membership Meeting.
SDSA Members and guests wandered through the 40,000 square foot facility filled with the exquisite furnishings and accessories this singular prophouse has always been known for, while a table elegantly spread with spectacular floral displays provided by Flower Art presented an arrray of delectables.

PENNY DREADFUL for Best Production Design/Set Decoration
PENNY DREADFUL was awarded the Production Design Award at the BAFTA TV Craft Awards on Sunday April 26th!
The award was shared by Set Decorator Philip Murphy SDSA and Production Designer Jonathan McKinstry.
The elaborately layered Victorian supernatural horror series on Showtime showcases remarkable sets depicting 1870's London filmed at the legendary Ardmore Studios just outside Dublin, a location chosen due to scope of the building of London Streets, the full Grand Guignol Theatre,Dr. Frankenstein’s laboratory and multiple elaborate interiors needing effects rigging for hair-raising scenes.

The SDSA announces the death of former longtime Business Member Jim Marin, who owned Art Deco LA prop house (the location now currently housing Business Member Nest) before relocating to Las Vegas in 2006. Most recently, he owned a far out and fabulous Vegas retail shop named Viva Hollywood.
Jim, age 69, was hospitalized in January at Las Vegas University Hospital with an abdominal aneurism. He died on March 25 2015 at an undisclosed hospice.
Jim had many friends and colleagues from his time as an SDSA Business Member.
The SDSA Annual Awards Luncheon was held on Sunday March 15th at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in Downtown LA.

Thank you to Bridge Props LA for hosting the SDSA General Membership Meeting on January 22nd. Owners Matt Hennessey and David Wilson, along with Manager JoAnn Vara and everyone’s favorite mascot Pepper, invited the SDSA Membership to view their newly opened Los Angeles/Burbank space with wine and soft drinks and tray-passed goodies prepared by SDSA catering pals Boyz in the Kitchen, who also brought out a fantastic dessert spread towards the end of the evening.
Bridge Props has been a New York prop house fixture since 2006 supplying feature films, television shows, photo shoots, commercials and events. With steady growth and a few moves around Brooklyn, they joined the SDSA in early 2011 and have been an active member since...all the way to opening a second Bridge Props on “The Coast” where the 12,000 sq. ft. facility hosted the SDSA’s first General Membership Meeting of 2015.
Balloon Columns from the ever-creative Aah Inspiring Balloons marked the entrance from busy Vanowen Street. Gorgeous floral displays provided by Sandy Rose Floral greeted attendees as they entered and milled about the warehouse. The warmth of the recently re-located Long Island City prop house and the gathering of friends and colleagues chased away the winter chill as SDSA Members and guests nibbled and noshed and sipped whiskey cocktails provided by Michter’s Whiskey, a small batch American-made whiskey supplied by Wendy Cohen, and wine provided by Bridge Props.
It has been almost 5 years now that the two well-established companies, prop house Props for Today and The Spoon Group, a custom fabrications house, merged to form propNspoon a one-stop solution for clients, for all of their prop and furniture rental needs and fabrication requirements. Now two years after relocating to their current Long Island City location, owners Dyann Klien and Harlan Silverstein opened their doors to host this SDSA East Coast Chapter Holiday Event.

Pam Elyea, VP of History for Hire and long time SDSA Business Member was the recipient of the President’s Award from the Valley Industry & Commerce Association at a luncheon held on December 11 in Woodland Hills.
Pam is known for being a high profile advocate, not just for the SDSA, but also as a community leader and activist for many causes including historical, heritage and preservation societies, education and preservation of film, music and the arts and community associations and service organizations, with VICA being another of Pam’s many devoted passions.
VICA, one of the most influential business advocacy organizations in Southern California maintains a regular presence at all levels of government to effectively represent Valley businesses in legislative and economic issues.

On November 6thWoven Accents opened their toney West Hollywood showroom for the SDSA General Membership Meeting. The crowd was dazzled by an array of antique, vintage tribal and cool contemporary rugs, as well as the Howe London line of antiques and custom furniture, lighting and curiosities, an amazing cache of European curiosities. Woven Accents is now the exclusive showroom in the U.S. to carry these stunning pieces.

Forman & Associates has emerged from its roots in the entertainment industry to expand into a broad spectrum of architectural and general lighting projects in the region and can support lighting designs for any project from the dramatic entrance at LAX to set decoration for film, television, commercials and other media.
On October 23rd, Forman and Associates put on quite a show for the SDSA with barbeque, cocktails and a tabletop exhibit space showcasing manufacturers of the latest technology in lighting and lighting equipment. Exhibitors included:
SDSA Decorator Member April Glover is hosting a brand new design series for A&E Networks called UNLIVABLE. The exciting new design style show features April, along with Gary Stein, helping new homeowners spin their HOT mess of a house into a little slice of heaven. The series premiere is October 15th at 7pm on FYI channel (formally the BIO channel).

Scandal, ABC’s addictive series about political intrigue and sabotage among Washington D.C.’s power circles, returns for a fourth season tonight. Created by Shonda Rhimes of Grey’s Anatomy fame, the thriller centers around D.C. fixer Olivia Pope (played by Kerry Washington), whose firm—made up of a staff she calls "gladiators in suits"—manages the personal and professional crises of Washington’s elite, including her on-again, off-again lover, President Fitzgerald Grant (played by Tony Goldwyn).
The offices at two of Washington’s most powerful addresses—K Street and 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue—and Pope’s residence are created by production designer Corey Kaplan (The X Files and Cold Case) and set decorator Barbara Cassel SDSA (Vegas). Believability and expediency are both challenges; studio backlots in Los Angeles double as the nation’s capital, while the production team designs an incredible 450 sets in a 22-episode season. "Knowing the real First Lady watches our show, the pressure is on," Cassel says of Michelle Obama, one of the series’ biggest fans.

On Friday September 19th, Dazian Fabric Environments hosted a spectacular special event dedicated to the Set Decorators Society of America and the Art Directors Guild.
The entire Dazian team wowed attendees with a vintage prohibition speakeasy leading to a dazzling Gatsby inspired showroom, complete with a Champagne Girl lounging inside a nine foot champagne glass on a table adorned with glasses filled with the chilled bubbly.

Now Shelley and Mannequin Gallery are guest stars on the small screen in an episode of A&E Network’s “SHIPPING WARS”, with Shelley introducing series co-star Dusty Davie to the groom he is to accompany.
The fabled fictional city known as the home of Batman enjoys another small-screen interpretation in Gotham, a new Fox series debuting Monday. The origin story of idealistic rookie detective James Gordon and the rise of supervillains Catwoman, the Joker, the Riddler, and the Penguin is reimagined against the dark backdrop of a decayed and crime-ridden urban decay.
Production designer Doug Kraner (SLEEPING WITH THE ENEMY) looked to the Batman film adaptations for their stylized, iconic settings. Kraner—along with director and executive producer, Danny Cannon, and creator and executive producer Bruno Heller—sought to create a timeless universe. "We looked at the best work from all of the earlier efforts," Kraner explains, "and then set out with the belief that by telling this new part of the story, we would achieve something not only different but exciting and fun. We wanted Gotham to be its own world. It’s a legend in our collective imagination."
Together with set decorators Regina Graves SDSA (SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY) and Andrew Baseman SDSA (THE AMERICANS), the design team created the spaces inhabited by Gotham’s custodians of justice and the seedy characters they chase.

In the aftermath of the MIDNIGHT RIDER tragedy, a wide group of filmmakers have found a positive way to address safety issues, and to honor Sarah Jones, by creating a mobile app!

I’m with an organization called Pledge to Sarah. Our website can be found at pledgetosarah.org.
We are a group of filmmakers from across the US that have banded together in a mutual desire to make our sets a safer place to be. We came together as a result of the Midnight Rider tragedy and the death of Sarah Jones. Some of us were lucky enough to know Sarah, and some of us will never get the opportunity. We are members of various locals and guilds. We are represented in multiple cities across the US. We are all volunteers and most of us have financially donated what we can to our cause. We are all donating our time while working full time jobs on set, oftentimes working during our lunch breaks or after a 14-hour day. We keep in constant contact with Sarah’s family to get their feedback and blessing on everything we do.
What we have spent the last few months working on is creating a mobile app. The app is geared towardseveryonein the industry and is free of charge. Anyone can use it, from actors to production assistants, all crew, union and non-union.
What the app does is 3-fold:
1) It allows for submission of time cards showing long or abusive hours that we can then pass on to the unions. This gives them more information when they go into contract negotiations.
2) It puts all of the CSATF safety bulletins at the tip of the user’s fingers. Instant access. No searching, no wondering. Instant access.
...This next one is the most important one to us….
3) It allows the user to call the three major safety hotlines anonymously. Most people don’t call because they validly fear punishment or retribution for placing the call. By allowing the caller’s phone number to be blocked when dialing, it creates a level of anonymity that wasn’t previously there. We hope that more people will call when something that is unsafe is not being properly addressed on set.
We planned to launch on September 22, 2014 — today. This would have been Sarah’s 28th birthday. We're still tweaking the app, so it will not be ready for a week or two but we still need your help.
We would love you to help us spread the word. The more people that know about the app, the more it will be downloaded and used. And we hope that it directly results in safer sets.

Tim Stepeck SDSA Set Decorator Member was among the chosen winners of television’s highest honor, the Emmy Award for his work as Set Decorator on the Showtime series HOUSE OF LIES. The Creative Arts Emmy Awards, which honor the craft and technical merit for television shows, were presented on August 16th at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles.
Tim shared the award with Production Designer Ray Yamagata and Art Director Chikako Suzuki in the Outstanding Art Direction For A Contemporary Program (half-hour or less) category.
Tim has twice been nominated for the Emmy, in 1999 for X FILES and again in 2005 for COLD CASE, other works include CALIFORNICATION for which Stepeck twice received nominations for the Art Directors Guild Excellence in Production Design Award and DAWSON’S CREEK.

Modernica Props hosted the SDSA General Membership Meeting on July 24th at their newly opened Silverlake/Atwater location.
Modernica recently moved from Downtown LA to the sprawling former Hostess Bakery on Gilroy Street. The vast historic space allows for all their merchandise of iconic modern furniture to be on view. Owner Franck Novak and Rental Manager Grant Jack entertained the SDSA crowd with a wonderful spread of small bite nibbles from Love Catering. SDSA Emmy Award nominees were announced, and door prizes of sparkling wines from L Mawby Vineyards and Tito’s Vodka, courtesy of Placed4Success Product Placement, and a Case Study, planter courtesy of Modernica, were given out to lucky winners.
Although the heat and humidity was high that day, so was attendance with many SDSA members coming out to support Modernica at their new digs, and to connect with old friends.
Thanks should be extended to Student Member Julia Mickus for her tireless assistance at this event, and to Business Members Sandy Rose Floral Inc and Aah Inspiring Balloons, once again, for their generous contributions.
Congratulations to Set Decorator Lisa K. Nilsson SDSA for a rare double win at the Daytime Emmy Awards!
In the surprise of the evening worthy of a soap opera storyline, there was a tie for Outstanding Achievement in Art Direction/Set Decoration/Scenic Design for a Drama Series. Lisa is the Set Decorator for both award winners ALL MY CHILDREN and ONE LIFE TO LIVE, and shared the awards with Production Designer Tim Goodmanson; Art Director Martin Fahrer and additional Set Decorator Sarah Fredericks.
Among Lisa’s other television credits are LAW & ORDER: CRIMINAL INTENT and CENTRAL PARK WEST.
The 41st Annual Daytime Creative Arts Emmy Awards were held June 20th at The Westin Bonaventure Hotel in downtown Los Angeles.

In Memoriam Kate Sheeley Set Decorator Kathryn (Kate) Sheeley SDSA, recipient of the SDSA Chair award, longtime member of the SDSA Board of Directors, Secretary of the Community Outreach Committee, Associate Editor of SET DECOR, former Vice-President of IATSE Local 490, dedicated set decorator and seemingly tireless volunteer, quietly passed away in the early hours of April 11th after a long, courageous and private battle with cancer.
As was her intent, few knew that the disease which she had successfully fought almost a decade ago had returned in 2010. She continued to work as a set decorator, assistant set decorator and buyer, through radiation treatments and several rounds of chemotherapy…in California, Minnesota, Pittsburgh, New Jersey and Atlanta…dedicated and committed.
Sheeley started in the entertainment business as a research archivist for KELO-TV, the CBS affiliate in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where she established and organized a video library containing over 30 years of broadcast news footage. She also was a researcher for the PBS documentary A CENTURY OF EXCELLENCE.
Moving to Minneapolis, MN, Sheeley worked for seven years as an on-air graphics designer for WCCO-TV (CBS). She left to pursue her Associates Degree, then signed on as an art department PA for the film OVERNIGHT DELIVERY, and discovered that set decoration was the ideal profession for her. She became a stylist for Marshall Fields and Fingerhut catalogs, Target Corporation and SHOP NBC. Set Decorator Cloudia Rebar SDSA hired her to assist on the feature films HERMAN USA and VANILLA SKY, as did Set Decorator Michele Poulik SDSA for the film JOE SOMEBODY. From there, Sheeley was off and running, decorating numerous commercials and several films, including FACTOTUM and JUSTICE. She joined IATSE Local 490 (MN), edited REEL FACTS the union’s quarterly, and served as Vice-President.
Ever the adventurer, Sheeley came to California to assist her friend Dana Reaves Bolla in the accounting department of the CARNIVALE pilot, with Set Decorator Leslie Frankenheimer SDSA. At that point, as Sheeley’s partner Jeffrey Kaufer recalls, “She decided to stay and break into Hollywood at twice the age of a film school grad!”
Sheeley worked in different locations throughout the US, and maintained dual residency in California and Minnesota. In her adopted West coast state, she often worked with Set Decorator/Production Designer Phillip Hoffman SDSA, current Chairman of the SDSA Board of Directors. She was set decorator of several television pilots, reality shows and the Hallmark Channel movie WHAT I DID FOR LOVE. Sensing the tide of migration of work to Atlanta, she burst into yet another new market for her talents, working as Buyer for Set Decorator David Smith SDSA for the 2014 film WELCOME TO YESTERDAY, and with Set Decorator Carol Bayne Kelley SDSA on the current series THE ORIGINALS.
For the History Channel, she delved into still other worlds as a researcher and project organizer for the MONSTER QUEST series. She also served as the editorial consultant on the book VOX AMPLIFIERS, THE JMI YEARS, written by Jim Elyea, co-owner of History for Hire. “Vintage” called to her, whether the Art Deco Society, her hat collection or a fine California wine, especially those produced by her cousins’ coastal winery.
Sheeley was a volunteer extraordinaire. Kaufer, whom she often roped into helping with projects, says, “Kate’s life was a list…even after being diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer, Kate continued to organize the world.” She was particularly committed to the work of the SDSA Community Outreach Committee, working year after year on their fund-raising art auction and the annual SPARK OF LOVE TOY DRIVE (Partnered between the SDSA COC and the LA Fire Department and ABC as the entertainment industry media partner), often in the background doing the heavy lifting as well as the detail-checking. Even this last Christmas, while battling the final stage of her illness, she packed her SUV to overflowing, delivering load after load of donated toys to the fire houses where they would be distributed. And then, as Kaufer has noted, “Kate quietly stepped off the stage.”
One of the many behind-the-scenes efforts that most people were unaware of was the work Sheeley did with the Motion Picture Television Fund, particularly as set decorator for their in-house television channel and for fund-raising events. She was responsible for updating and styling the foundation’s Media Room, and hoped that support for it would continue. Jennifer Clymer, MPTF Media & Production Manager says, “We are so moved that the media room meant so much to Kate. She had a wonderful impact on all of us who had the honor to know her.”
Sheeley’s family asks that donations be made in her memory to the MPTF Media Room or the donor’s favorite charity. A private service will be held in Sioux Falls, SD.

Dunn, along with collaborating Production Designer Catherine Martin, would be honored in the Best Achievement in Production Design category. Their visuals captivated film audiences with the opulence of the "truly-moneyed" highborn, the ostentatious splendor of the nouveau riche, the gritty seedier side of the city, and the clash between the these worlds.

Natural Curiosities hosted the SDSA February General Membership Meeting at their oh so arty Echo Park digs. The historic Jensen Recreation Center, built in 1924 now houses this remarkable collective of artists creating pieces both individual and mass-produced. Founder Christopher Wilcox along with Jeff Hughes, Faith Ford and a collective of fine artists threw open the doors of their astonishing, lofty work/party place. Thank you for hosting, and sharing.
Together, they're visited by an average of more than 5 million viewers at 9 p.m. each Wednesday, not counting millions more who visit later via DVR, on-demand, online replay, pirated streams, etc.
The Bravo cooking competition and the FX supernatural drama share a time slot, with "Coven" drawing most of the combined audience total. Recent visits to both spaces revealed they also share links to New Orleans' rich architectural history -- one actually, the other movie-magically.
"...The devil, among other specters, is in the details of the "Coven" set. Local ornamental-plaster craftsman Tommy Lachtin was hired by the production to fabricate ornate ceiling medallions, moldings and fireplace mantels -- a six-week job during pre-production. ("Those kinds of plaster artists are rare and getting rarer every day," Worthington said.)
Doorsills and doorways were dressed and distressed to simulate a century-plus of paint jobs. Light switches are antique push buttons. The plumbing under one upstairs sink leaks, creating a very lifelike stain in the downstairs ceiling directly beneath it, an accident with benefits.
"I saw that and thought, 'Oh, God. There's a stain,'" Worthington said. "Then I thought, 'It's kind of perfect. Let's just leave it.' All those houses have those problems."
Set decorator Ellen Brill added the finishing touches with French-influenced furnishings sometimes selected for their odd silhouettes."
No contest: American Horror Story: Coven is one of creepiest–and most addictive–shows on television. Besides mesmerizing performances by Emma Roberts, Sarah Paulson, and Jessica Lange, it’s the setting of Miss Robichaux’s Academy for Exceptional Young Ladies—a boarding school for troubled young witches in New Orleans—that makes Coven so believably eerie.
Set decorator Ellen Brill says the inspiration for the school’s interior came from an image of an actual plantation on The Big Easy, “It was painted all white, with white floors, and had dark outlined furniture and dark artwork. Every time I saw an image of this place I thought it was in black and white, which I really love—like an old noir film.” Together with the show’s co-creator, Ryan Murphy, and production designer, Mark Worthington, Brill created a set with an authentic New Orleans look, that doesn’t go for the same instant terror effect as last season’s Asylum did, but instead sets the stage for scary things to happen, “I didn’t feel like I was going for the scare factor this time. I just tried to be more true to the culture and architecture here. New Orleans is famous for its voodoo and history of magical things, so I wanted it to feel like it was real and would fit in.” From custom paintings modeled after former witches to furniture with haunting silhouettes, Brill created the ultimate backdrop for a show you’re scared to take your eyes off of.

Luxe: Principal Fred Arens at Ob-jects Fine Set Decorations’ new warehouse.
Having a seat at Ob-jects Fine Set Decorations could mean relaxing on a sectional covered with silver ultra-suede or pulling up to the dining room table in a polished aluminum chair.
And if that couch or chair looks familiar, maybe you saw it on “Modern Family,” “CSI” or some other television series decked out in Ob-ject’s extensive collection of upscale furniture.
Now, Tom Bugenhagen and Fred Arens, the company’s principals, are bringing their collection to the San Fernando Valley by relocating to Sun Valley from Culver City.
In doing so, they are following the path of other prop houses who have moved in recent years to be closer to studios and production space in Burbank, Glendale and Studio City.
“What we are providing is a location near everyone else,” said Arens, the vice president and general manager.
Objects signed a 10-year lease to move into a 40,000 square-foot former manufacturing building adjacent to the Burbank Bob Hope Airport. With high ceilings and spacious interior, the structure can hold the hundreds of items the firm has obtained during more than 20 years in business.
The move is expected to be completed by mid-October. Ob-jects has 10 employees but has no immediate plans for hiring despite moving into a significantly larger space, Arens said.
Amy Feldman, who handled set decoration for the sitcom “Two Broke Girls” filmed on the Warner Bros Studios, said she is a loyal customer and is glad the shop is closer to the Burbank studio lot.
“The convenience factor is very high on the scale,” she added.
The studios still maintain their own prop departments that are augmented by the independent vendors. Large prop houses can be generalists offering anything needed by a movie or television set decorator.
“A good amount of retail stores will also do rentals of furniture as well,” said Gene Cane, executive director of the Set Decorators Society of America in North Hollywood.
Then there are firms like Ob-jects that specialize in just upscale furniture. Competitors include Nest Studio Rentals and Prop Services West, both in North Hollywood, the latter of which recently moved over the hill to the Valley.
Elizabeth Keenan rented furniture from Ob-jects for the recently completed surf-and-sand feature film “Ride” starring and directed by Helen Hunt, the live action Disney feature “Alice in Wonderland,” and HBO series “Luck.”
“They are constantly adding new items to their collection which is a rarity with most prop houses,” Keenan said of the collection, which includes sofas, ottomans, rugs, chaises, daybeds and armoires.
The Ob-jects collection – which ranges from modern to antique – was sourced from traditional vendors as well as flea markets, eBay, and antique auctions, said Arens, who declined to speculate on its exact size.
Arens and Bugenhagen, president and creative director, also design their own pieces so they have something special to offer their clients.
“We try to come up with original stuff and embellish it with other antiques and high-end items,” Arens said.
The company’s rental policies are common to other prop houses. Items are sent out for a week at a time with discounts offered for one-day rentals. Longer term rents of a month include a final week for free. Rental prices vary depending on the value of the item.
The company declined to disclose revenue.
Arens also declined to give specific pricing but Keenan said the company was flexible with what it charges depending on the length and budget of a project.
The search for a new building actually started two years ago with a goal of finding something in the 30,000 square-foot to 35,000 square-foot range.
The Sun Valley building was looked at several months ago and while bigger than what was needed no better option was found. To prepare the building Ob-jects picked up the cost of new windows and doors, and the landlord, Howard Industrial JV, paid for the cleaning up and painting of the building.
A new doorway has been cut from one wall as an entrance for customers and two 24-foot diameter fans installed on the ceiling as the substitute for the cool ocean winds that keep the Culver City location at a comfortable temperature.
“They are amazing,” Arens said of the fans. “You feel this big breeze come through.”
SDSA Members Heidi Miller and Barbara Munch Cameron were among the talented crafts persons who were honored with Emmy statuettes at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards handed out at ceremonies in Los Angeles on September 15th.
Heidi Miller, the Set Decorator for "MasterChef" won in the Multi Camera category along with Production Designer John Janavs and Art Director Robert Frye. Heidi has been previously nominated with the same team for their work on “Hell’s Kitchen”. MasterChef airs on the Fox Network.
Barbara Munch Cameron, the Set Decorator for the lavish HBO Liberace telefilm "Behind the Candelabra" won in the Mini Series/Movie category. She shared the award with Production Designer Howard Cummings and Art Director Patrick M Sullivan Jr. Barbara has previously been nominated for an Emmy for the “Glee” pilot.

SDSA Set Decorator Beth Kushnick makes history in bringing the first licensed furniture collection in TV history with "The Good Wife Collection”
Beth and CBS partnered Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams on furniture and Interlude Home on lighting and accessories. The Good Wife (TGW) line was introduced at the Fall International Furniture Market in High Point, N.C.

Acclaimed Set Decorator and Longtime SDSA Member Jim Mees Passes at 57.
Jim Mees, the Emmy Award-winning Set Decorator for STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION and many other hit television series, passed away on Friday, March 29th, at the age of 57, following a 12-month battle with pancreatic cancer.
"Jim was an inspiration to everyone, handling this deadly disease with his trademark passion, good will, and humor," said his life partner, Dr. Michael Smyth. "Typical of Jim, it was he who comforted the rest of us, showing us how to live and die with courage and grace."
A native of New York, Mees relocated to Los Angeles in the 1970s, where he quickly won acclaim for his work as a designer and decorator on such hit television series as THE JEFFERSONS, ONE DAY AT A TIME, WHO'S THE BOSS, PRIVATE PRACTICE, WOMEN'S MURDER CLUB, LIE TO ME and the aforementioned STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION. In all, he lent his talents to more than a dozen shows spanning a 35-year Hollywood career.
For seventeen of those years, he created sets for three successive STAR TREK series: THE NEXT GENRATION, VOYAGER, and ENTERPRISE - breakthrough work for which he received six Emmy Award nominations. In 1990, he won the Emmy for Art Direction/Set Decoration for STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENRATION episode Sins of the Father.
In the LOS ANGELES TIMES obituary (link provided below) for Mees, Patrick Stewart, who played Captain Jean-Luc Picard, remembers the set decorator as particularly good at blending futuristic aspects with contemporary sensibilities. "Jim made you feel hopeful about the future, because you could see that good taste was still present in features of design 400 years from now and hadn't been completely over-whelmed by technology."
Along with his considerable television series credits, Mees decorated several feature films and designed live shows for The Beach Boys, Earth,Wind & Fire,Chicago, and Diana Ross. His work on television commercials, furniture and fabric design, theme park installations, residential interiors, exterior landscapes, runway fashion and multi-media special events is testimony to the breadth and depth of his creative reach.
Mees began his career at the young age of twelve, when he became a protègè to the iconic textile designer Vera, helping create the images that would characterize her scarves, sportswear, tableware, and linens. He went on to study at Carnegie-Mellon University in the School of Drama, graduating with Honors.
In 2008, Mees relocated his primary residence, along with his design studio, from Los Angeles to Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania, where he lived with Michael Smyth and their two dogs, Connie and Waldo. Mees is survived by his mother, Helen Mees; his siblings, Sherene Williams, Kathy Gordon, and Dan Mees; and friends and colleagues too numerous to name or count.
Funeral services will be held at Salem Lutheran Church, 899 Salem Road in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania on Monday April 8th, at 11:00AM. (570-374-8755). A reception at the church will follow. Local florist is Rine's Florist (800-993-1953).
Donations may be made in his memory to Lambda Legal (lambdalegal.org), an organization whose mission it is to achieve full recognition of the civil rights of LGBT individuals and those with HIV through impact litigation, education,and public policy work.

Everyone knew if Jim Mees called you to work, you took the call! We have all heard that many times about a lot of people, but especially about Jim. Even if you didn't know him, you knew who he was. You knew you were going to learn...A LOT. His work was unparalleled, legendary and unsurpassed.
I had been fortunate enough to day-play on a couple of Star Trek shows with him. This type of work is very different - it wasn't rented, it was created - out of Jim's imagination. EVERYTHING was a custom build at the mill, or from a fiberglass mold. It was a really interesting process to watch.
After Star Trek wrapped, Jim started doing shows with a buyer. Luckily, I was his choice. For many years, I had witnessed the undeniable talent that I had seen before, but now creating environments that were present day as opposed to the future. That same magical process happened, day after day, set after set, year after year...with all the grace and confidence that all of us who knew Jim had experienced. We did many projects together outside of the film industry, as well. Nothing ever rattled him. He was never nervous, always confident.
The best part of working with Jim was the friendship we developed. He trusted me, I trusted him, as true friends. That wouldn't ever be taken for granted, by either one of us, ever.
I spent the last weekend before Jim passed with him and his partner Michael, at their beautiful home in Pennsylvania. We shared many laughs, and many tears. As I hovered over him the whole time, trying to be helpful, he laughed and said, 'You are gonna hover over me right to the end, aren't you?' We chuckled together.
My dear Jim, my mentor and friend, it is now your turn to hover over me....

2013 marks the 20th Anniversary of the 1993 founding of the Set Decorators Society of America.
To kick off a year of a year of celebration Artspace Warehouse hosted a very special cocktail party on January 24th.
Artspace proprietor and curator Claudia Deutsch opened the doors of the Beverly Boulevard gallery to 200 guests who snacked on sumptuous hors d’oeuvre and sipped iced Tito’s Vodka or cocktails of fresh squeezed lime juice and Cointreau while mingling with friends and colleagues and taking in the remarkable art housed at Artspace Warehouse. The artwork, much from local established artists is available for rental or purchase and all cleared for use in film and television.

Garrett Lewis, four time Academy Award nominated set decorator, dancer and actor, died Tuesday, January 29 at the age of 77. He was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1935 and died at his home in Woodland Hills, California of natural causes.
A native of St. Louis, Missouri, Garrett Lewis had a long and storied career as a dancer, actor and set decorator. His career began while still in college when he was offered the dance lead for a season at the Kansas City Starlight Theatre. After that one season of summer stock, he went to New York and immediately landed his first Broadway show My Fair Lady. This was followed by numerous roles in Broadway productions including Hello Dolly, Vintage ‘60 and First Impressions.
Lewis played the role of Cornelius in Hello Dolly starring opposite five different leading ladies. First, he went on national tour with Carol Channing. Hello Dolly was the first stage show at the newly opened Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles in 1965. He reprised the role with Mary Martin in London. Hello Dolly made its premiere in the West End at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane on December 2, 1965, with the Queen Mother in attendance. Lewis also performed this role opposite Carole Cook, Dora Bryan and Patrice Munsel in various productions of the show.
Lewis was a featured performer on The Red Skelton Show and The Julie Andrews Hour. Aside from his television work, which included many major network shows at the time on both coasts, he appeared extensively in clubs across the country, supporting such leading ladies as Anna Maria Alberghetti, Arlene Dahl, Dorothy Provine and others. He was a soloist in The Lido Show in Paris, and appeared as the male lead in Little Mary Sunshine in Paris. Garrett transitioned into film and appeared in both Star! with Julie Andrews and Funny Lady.
By the time Lewis finished Funny Lady in 1975, musicals were becoming rare. Lewis’ friend, agent Sue Mengers and her husband Jean-Claude Tramont, purchased Zsa Zsa Gabor’s house in Bel Air in 1975. They admired the way Lewis had decorated his own home, and asked him to redesign their new one. This lead Lewis to designing private homes for celebrities including Barbra Streisand, Herbert Ross, Barry Diller and many others. He effortlessly segued into a second career.
In the late seventies when Herbert Ross was directing The Turning Point he asked Lewis to decorate several sets. Later while filming California Suite, Ross called him in again to assist with the art direction. While his title was “Pictorial Consultant”, his third career as a set decorator for films was launched.
Lewis worked on 39 films as a set decorator. He was nominated for four Academy Awards for Art Direction – Beaches, Glory, Hook and Bram Stoker’s Dracula. He was also nominated for a Primetime Emmy for his work on Gepetto. He created everything from civil war tents for Glory to lavish Bugatti inspired furniture for Bram Stoker’s Dracula, a particularly special film for him. His films included Mrs. Doubtfire, Pretty Woman, Steel Magnolias, Backdraft, Against All Odds, as well as countless others. His work as a set decorator took him to Morocco, Canada and all parts of the United States. He loved his work. He proudly served on the Executive Committee for the Art Director’s branch of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences.
SDSA spends Day with the Set Decorator in Downtown L.A..
On Saturday January 26th the SDSA held another Day with the Set Decorator educational event, hosted by Los Angeles Center Studios.
After guest registration the began in the Beaudry Theatre for some background on the lot and presentations by SDSA Set Decorator Members Rosemary Brandenburg, William De Biasio and David Smith discussion projects they have done at the studio over the years. A presentation by guest Kevin Funston, a member of the Location Managers Guild of America, on how location managers guide use of the multiple shooting areas of the lot.
From there a walking tour of various studio locations and services brought the group to the stages for Disney Channel hit shows Shake It Up and Good Luck Charlie. The group then had lunch followed by a Q@A with the presenting decorators and docents. The event concluded appropriately with a trip to the morgue.

SDSA Set Decorator Bryan Venegas has been an established set decorator for many years in feature films and television and has recently become known for fine interiors on recent projects such as "Brothers and Sisters" and "GCB". Creating a period interior is always a challenge, particularly when you have to design nine countries over several decades. Such was the case for the designers of the HBO film, Hemingway and Gellhorn, starring Nicole Kidman and Clive Owen as the star-crossed lovers.
First, a quick history lesson. While we are all familiar with the life and times of acclaimed Pulitzer Prize winning author Ernest Hemingway, Martha Gellhorn often remains a footnote in history. At a time when women were married and raising families, she became a war correspondent and witness to some of the biggest battles of the past century -- Spanish Civil War, World War II and Vietnam. She was also Hemingway's third wife.
Production designer Geoffrey Kirkland (The Right Stuff) and set decorator Jim Erickson (Water for Elephants) were responsible for the film's 30s and 40s designs that ranged from houses in Key West and Cuba to a war torn hotel turned hospital in Madrid and all shot on location in San Francisco.

Fan response to show's set designs inspires licensing pact
CBS CONSUMER PRODUCTS TO INTRODUCE LINE OF BRANDED HOME DECOR BASED ON THE HIT DRAMA THE GOOD WIFE
Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams and Interlude Home Collaborate to Manufacture Home Furnishings, Home Accessories, Accent Furniture and Lighting That Will Appear On Air and Be Available to the Public This Fall.
CBS Consumer Products has tapped Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams and Interlude Home to create a home décor line inspired by CBS’s hit drama THE GOOD WIFE. The new line, the first license for the television series, is developed in collaboration with set decorator, Beth Kushnick, and inspired by the actual set decoration ideas seen on the series. Products will debut on the show in the fall during the show’s fourth season. An announcement of the collaboration will be revealed at The High Point Market trade show in High Point, N.C., on April 21-26, 2012.
THE GOOD WIFE’s set decoration has consistently generated positive interest from the show’s viewers, resulting in Kushnick writing a blog called “The Good Look of The Good Wife” at www.cbs.com and tweeting @goodwifesetdec where she answers questions about her work and the series’ aesthetic.
“This opportunity sprouted from fan feedback to Beth’s inspiring decor. We used our merchandising and retail experience to make this line a reality,” said Liz Kalodner, executive vice presdident and general manager of CBS Consumer Products. “The collaboration between Beth and the manufacturers has been seamless resulting in fashionable and sophisticated interiors throughout the set of THE GOOD WIFE. We just can’t wait for fans to see the collection.”

'Mad Men': The story behind Don Draper's new digs "Mad Men" returned after its long hiatus Sunday, earning record
ratings and a host of Midcentury Modern design fans newly obsessed with
Don Draper's new Manhattan home. It's June 1966, and though Draper
(played by Jon Hamm) might be a newlywed, he's traded in his dreary digs
from last season for an Upper East Side spread complete with serious
bachelor pad trappings.
17-B, right, set decorator Claudette Didul SDSA said, is "in a high-rise
that feels like it was built in 1960 with a white-carpeted sunken living
room and a fascinating fireplace and a Case Study-style kitchen with
two pass through windows."
Set decoration: the fashionable world of 'Jane by Design' The show's emphasis is on high school student Jane (Erica Dasher), an Anna Wintour-like fashion exec named Gray (Andie MacDowell, pictured here) and their amazing clothes (and shoes!). But set decorator Richard C. Walker SDSA said "Jane by Design" creator April Blair was intent on equally young and fresh interiors. "She was always saying ‘Domino’ to me," Blair said, referencing the now defunct magazine geared for young do-it-yourself decorators.
You may not see them on the screen, but their influence extends to every set and every scene in your favorite movies. In the last few years Katie Spencer SDSA took the role of set decorator on such wonderful productions as “Pride & Prejudice”, “Atonement”, “Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day” and “Sherlock Holmes”. In this conversation she talks about the craft of set decoration, taking a closer look at the artistic and financial aspects of movie productions, supporting the main story while not drawing too much attention to the set objects and, in particular, her work on the movie “Hanna“.

Using colors, accessories and telling details, set decorators help
flesh out a character, whether it's a working-class stiff in a worn-in
apartment or a wealthy doyenne in a slick salon.
For Los Angeles-based set decorator Lynda Burbank, "homey" means
vegetable soup. "I love the soup palette of sage green, burnt orange and
warm beige – these colors are very soothing and make people feel
comfortable in the set," she says.

Clutter and collections of things give a room a "lived-in" look, says
Archie D'Amico, set decorator for ABC's "Cougar Town." He also has
worked on "Ugly Betty" and "NYPD Blue."
Set decorators have hundreds of prop houses and stores in Los Angeles
or New York from which to shop. "Very often I'll need something
tomorrow, if not sooner," says Laura Richarz, who has decorated sets on
"Married with Children," "Everybody Loves Chris" and "True Blood."
On Location: ISS prop House going great guns in Hollywood
One of the Southland’s largest prop houses is going great guns in
Hollywood. Over the last decade, Bilson’s family-run operation has
emerged as one of the largest suppliers of arms to the movie and
television industries, building a $20-million-a-year business by
offering a one-stop shop for props, especially the firing kind.
The film — director Martin Scorsese's first geared toward a young audience — was shot on a full-scale train station set built from scratch, directly inspired by Selznick's illustrations.
"It was really as if my drawings had come to life around me, except everything was bigger and more beautiful than I even could have imagined," said Selznick, who was particularly struck by the production, having done theater set design at Brown University in Providence, R.I.
The Oscar winners behind the massive set, built at London's Shepperton Studios, are production designer Dante Ferretti and SDSA set decorator Francesca Lo Schiavo, who have each worked on several of Scorsese's films. The Italian husband-wife duo constantly turned to the source material to create the look of the 1930s-era adventure about an orphan who lives in a train station.
In a city with so many different ideas about architecture and so many generations of design, it's easy to draw inspiration. "Of course LA has amazing mid-century design and it has only made me love that aesthetic more. The style of home where we live just doesn't exist in very many places. It was designed by the architect Cliff May and is one of 700 similar atomic rancho homes in the area...

adults, however, the cool Manhattan apartment sets might have held the

housed many artists and musicians and had a crazy history of artistic
renovations, leaving a patchwork of mismatched cabinets and vibrant
colored linoleum tile in the kitchen," he said.
Set Decorator Regina Graves SDSA took this cue in creating the look of the
other rooms, including a bathroom that dated to 1912 and was outfitted
with tiles from Subway Ceramics and a pull-chain toilet from Historic House Parts
"We wanted the apartment to feel a little cluttered but lived in and
well loved," Graves said. "We did this using multiple layers of old, new
and found items. Grace and Patrick are a quintessential New York couple

Oscar-nominated Inception set decorator Larry Dias SDSA is a long
way from the dairy farm he grew up on with his six siblings in
California’s Central Valley. The Hollywood mega talent, who has brought
sets to life for films such as Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Transformers, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl and the upcoming Battleship, lives on a peaceful Laurel Canyon street in a 2,400-square-foot home that resembles a modern cabin from the exterior.
Hilton died at home on Sunday, May 8, of brain cancer. He leaves behind and brokenhearted his partner, Philippa King, and their two daughters, Chloe (Adam) and Astrid (Andrew). Dear son of Anne Rosemarin and brother of Freya Schnitzler (Larry) and Arno Rosemarin. Predeceased by his father Samson, his father-in-law Robert King, his brother-in-law Matthew King and sister-in-law Brenda King.
He was much loved and will be terribly missed by his extended family of aunts, cousins, nephews, nieces, his brother-in-law, Andrew King and sister-in-law, Jennifer King, as well as Maaret Koskinen.
Hilton studied music and theatre in Montreal, where he was born on June 16, 1952, and studied technical theatre at Ryerson University in Toronto. He worked around the world as a Set Decorator on more than fifty motion pictures. He has received the Set Decorators Society of America’s Outstanding Career Achievement Award (click here to read Spotlight story on his award). He faced terminal illness with courage, peace and equanimity. He has led the way for all of us.
We thank our friends and family, the Palliative Care team and caregivers for all of their love, care and support, without which we would not have been able to care for Hilton at home as he wished.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 13 at 2 p.m. at the Mount Pleasant Visitation Centre, 375 Mount Pleasant Road, Toronto, East Gate Entrance (416-485-5572). Interview with Iron Man 2 and THOR Set Decorator, Lauri Gaffin SDSA Having worked as the Set Decorator on huge movies such as Mission: Impossible II, Zathura: A Space Adventure, The Pursuit of Happyness and more recently, Iron Man and Iron Man 2, Lauri Gaffin was kind enough to take time out of her busy schedule to talk to comic book fansite about her work on Thor.

announces the passing of beloved colleague Edward J. McDonald on February 2nd.
Eddie McDonald had
a long and distinguished career as a Set Decorator. An SDSA member prior to
retirement, Eddie was the recipient of four Emmy Award nominations, taking home
the trophy in 1988 for the period piece telefilm “I’ll Be Home for Christmas”.
Other works include feature films "Escape from Alcatraz" and "Indiana Jones and
the Last Crusade", TV films "Mrs. Sundance" and "Studs Lonigan" (Emmy nomination),
and TV series"Barney Miller", "Beyond Westworld"
(Emmy Nomination), "Night Court" and The Drew Carey Show, ending his career with another Emmy nomination.. A favorite among
vendors, Eddie was as kind and thoughtful as he was professional, he was known
for taking personal interest in the well-being of staff members of the
businesses he frequented. Mr. McDonald will be missed by a great many people.
SDSA Decorator Member Robin Peyton has passed away in the
early morning hours of July 1st 2010.
Robin succumbed to a sudden cardiac arrest brought on in
part by chronic obstructive pulmonary
disease (COPD) at St. John’s Hospital in Santa Monica.
A private fellow and proper gentleman Robin was born 60
years ago January 25 in England and spent his formative years in Kenya. His
education and original vocation was as an architect but through events the lure
of Hollywood brought him into the studio system where he worked as set dresser
and lead man before taking on Set Decorating for such films as ‘Sweet Hearts
Dance” cult favorites “Bill & Ted’s
Bogus Journey” & “Meet the Deedles” and “D3:The Mighty Ducks.Robin was particularly proud of his work and association
with the T.V. films “Lakota Woman: Siege
at Wounded Knee” and “Love Can Build a Bridge” a telefilm about the famous
Judds singing duo.
Robin, a long time
practitioner of Easter Meditation spent much time at the SYDA Foundation’s
Siddah Yoga Meditation Center in West Los Angeles.Not only did Robin partake of the attributes
and teachings of the Siddah Community, being known as a “profoundly” talented
landscape designer Robin also put his skills to work on the grounds at the

But when you're working on as many as eight scenes per day, as she does, it occasionally helps to get lucky. "A funny thing happens in this business," she says. "We're required to find so many objects, so fast, with such specific requirements, that we almost manufacture them out of thin air."

Set Decor: Sex and the City 2 "We had to work with the city and close down part of Fifth Ave. to pull it off," says producer John Melfi. "And to really sell it, we brought in dozens of period cars and hundreds of extras in '80s costumes." Add to that a hundred-person crew, an army of trucks carrying tons of
equipment, swarms of paparazzi and hundreds of onlookers, and you get
the challenge of filming on the streets of Manhattan.
"The palette in this closet is very different from the palette in Carrie's old closet," adds set decorator Lydia Marks SDSA "It's really about Carrie's grownup clothes. There are no tutus here."
Norman Balos, the quintessential gentleman behind House of Props, died Tuesday April 20th at his home in Marina del Rey.
Prior to establishing House of Props with then owner Al Torf in 1952, Norm worked in the auctioning of antiques and fine art. Those of us that knew Norm through House of Props know how extensive that knowledge was. Norm was a font of invaluable information, and his expertise was called upon daily for the 56 years that Norm ran House of Props. Norm was akin to having your own personal “Antiques Roadshow” at your fingertips. Decorated sets since the 1950’s were often more historically accurate due to Norm’s remarkable knowledge in the decorative arts of specific eras. With Norm’s passing we’ve lost an irreplaceable entertainment industry icon.

Set Decor: The Blind Side Set decorator Susan Benjamin, SDSA visited the family and studied Leigh Anne's decorating in order to capture it on film. I read in an interview with Leigh Anne that when asked what she thought of the movie, she said she'd have to see it again, as she spent the first viewing paying attention only to how they portrayed her home. The rattan sofa from “The Golden Girls” awaits its next role from a shelf deep inside the 20th Century Props warehouse here. Nearby is the futuristic shower Tom Cruise used in “Minority Report” and an armchair that starred with Marilyn Monroe in multiple films. Set Decor: The Hangover One crew member spent a week just gluing beer bottles together as part
of an effort to inject just the right amount of destruction and
debauchery into the film's bachelor party site.
For "The Hangover," a movie about a bachelor party gone a little too wild, set decorator Danielle Berman didn't have a lot to guide her when thinking about how to trash the hotel suite the partyers wake up to. "Not a lot was actually written" in the script, she says. "The scene was just described as 'the destroyed suite.' " The crew had two days to prepare the results of the debauchery. "We just had to think: These guys took a form of Ecstasy. What would they be obsessed about doing?" So, the crew built an extreme house of cards, tied sheets into a swing and attacked the furniture with a sword. One crew member spent a week gluing beer bottles together. Some blow-up dolls, believe it or not, were deemed too risqué. -- Patrick Kevin Day

These movies hold up a mirror and often poke fun at the trends that we take so seriously. Remember Meryl Streep with her power handbags? Yes, the plots are fun and the acting amusing, but really, we are going to see the clothes, the sets and the styling.

“Big Sunday” was different for a small group of SDSA members than it was for most people who volunteered to paint, fix, organize, build and plant all over LA County. Pam and Jim Elyea at “History for Hire” were asked to host a “Day with the Set Decorators” for teenagers from several shelters. SDSA members Laura Richarz, Corri Levelle, Nya Patrinos, Chris Champagne and Daryn Goodall were joined by shopper Janna Crawford, we gave several tours, talked about the craft of Set Decoration, shared war stories, demonstrated the tools of the trade and answered a thousand questions. A group of girl scouts arrived early to set up, stayed late to clean up and served pizza in the middle of the day. All in all, it was a great day. The Show Must Go On! SDSA Members help at the office during the strike...
While the strike goes on with the WGA, many members of the SDSA have used their sudden "free time" to volunteer around the office.
