SDSA Day With the Set Decorator December 18th, 2021
The premier New York based, Day with the Set Decorator, featuring
the extraordinary David Schlesinger SDSA was a special treat indeed!
David took us along on a shopping experience and sit-down chat at the historic Newel Props located in Long Island City, New York. David and SDSA Executive Director
Gene Cane then discussed his process from page to screen focusing on two of his film projects,KNIVES OUTandJOHN WICK: CHAPTER 3.
New York City presents a different set of challenges as compared to Los Angeles,
Atlanta and other locals. This behind-the-scenes look and wealth of information
from a seasoned pro was invaluable.

In a Few Words...
Which talent would you most like to have?
I would like to be able to have conversations with animals.
Beyond that, I’d like to be a true polyglot. I speak 3 languages but mostly at the “street” level.
It’s so rewarding to travel & converse with locals in
their native tongue - would love to excel in that.
What do you consider your greatest achievement?
Life achievement--my family
Career achievement--working in foreign countries in multiple currencies with crews of many spoken languages and degrees of experience - not an easy task. On one film, only one person on my team had ever worked on a film before. The great reward is coming though successfully with an appreciation of how many different ways there are to do things. The bonus is a new set of lifelong friends,.
Which word or phrase do you most overuse?
We have so much to do!
Just one more thing…..
Where’s the nearest pool?
What do you look for on the Craft Services table? Fresh squeezed juice, dark chocolate, not necessarily in that order
Please name a benefit of being an SDSA member.
I have had the great fortune of working with creative teams of people in challenging & exotic circumstances. I’ve been continually amazed at my great fortune of being paid to travel to places I might never have visited. The length of time spent on a project like the ones in Uganda & Thailand gave me a chance to really experience the cultures & get to know the people. I live in Austin & have worked in far-flung places, but I had very little connection with others following our path before I joined SDSA. It was so nice to find a communication base with peers working together to create community & support. I love seeing communiques from SDSA in my inbox and wish I could attend in-person events. One of these days….
