The Buzz - April 2026
The SDSA is Evolving & It's Good News for Our Members
After much consideration, the SDSA Board voted to transition to remote operations by June 2026.
We are deeply grateful to Willy Carter and his team at RC Vintage for their incredible support.
Our global Set Decorator community will stay united and collaborative, allowing the organization to grow in the following ways:

•   Reinvest resources previously spent on overhead into programs and resources that directly benefit members.

•   Grow our capacity to engage regional and international members through more consistent outreach, programming, and support.

•   Accelerate the development of online resources, including enhanced access to tools, archives, and industry information, that serve the full breadth of our international community.

Nothing changes about what the SDSA is here to do. We remain fully committed to supporting, celebrating, and advocating for Set Decorators at every stage of their careers.

We appreciate your support and patience as we take this step forward. Transitions like this one are made easier by a membership that believes in what the SDSA stands for, and we are energized by the stronger, more connected, member-focused organization we are building together.
As always, we welcome your thoughts and questions.

Onward Together,

Kelsey Fowler

SDSA President

On behalf of the SDSA Board of Directors

The Transition is in Full Swing!

On Monday, April 20th, we started the process of digitizing 30+ years of SDSA records.
From Set Decorator applications to the famed SDSA Market Place site plans, we're going through it all!
Gene Cane, Laura Richarz, Kelsey Fowler, and Pam Eleya were on the front lines to start the process.
Former SDSA president, Laura Richarz (Earl Cooperman Lifetime Achievement Honoree), and current president Kelsey Fowler took over the conference table to painstakingly go through each file.
Gene is a wealth of information about the organization, a must-have for deciding what to keep and what to shred.
Jan Pascale SDSA, David Smith SDSA, Julie Drach SDSA, and Traci Spadorcia SDSA also joined the efforts to keep the digitization going!

SDSA Office Hours

The first SDSA Office Hours was a hit!

Students and associates met top Set Decorators from LA, NY, and Atlanta for a two-hour session on breaking into the industry, essential skills, and career paths. Our experts shared tips on starting as a PA, union entry, mastering logistics, and more.
Don’t miss the next session—exclusive for members! Email sdsa@setdecorators.org for details.

Thank you to our panelists: Jan Pascale (MANK), Ellen Reede (PALM ROYALE), David Schlesinger (SEVERANCE), Claudette Didul (MAD MEN), and Mary Ellen Hendrick-Correa (WANDAVISION)—shared candid advice, answered tough questions, and demystified the business of set decoration.

This is what your SDSA membership unlocks. Don't miss the next session!

SDSA Office Hours happens twice yearly—exclusively for student and associate members. For more information, contact: sdsa@setdecorators.org

The SDSA at WONDERCON: RECAP

This year at WonderCon, the SDSA presented three panels featuring various movies and TV shows that are popular with the convention-going public.

The panels were moderated by SDSA Set Decorators, and presented set photos and insightful questions answered by the excellent SDSA Set Decorators of those projects. All three panels were very popular with attendees, and the Q&A at the end of each panel was full of audience members asking great questions. We’re so happy to bring education about Set Decoration to the public, and look forward to doing the same at the next Comic-Con!

A heartfelt thank you to the SDSA Set Decorators who shared their wisdom at the panel. Your expertise and insights are truly appreciated.  Thank you for your generosity.

We are deeply grateful to organizers Rae Deslich SDSA, Michelle Hall SDSA, and Prena Chawla SDSA for continuing to make these phenomenal panels possible with their incredible contributions.
