In this issue: Holiday Party coverage from New York and Atlanta, Warner Bros. hosts LA meeting and David Schlesinger in the Set Decorator Spotlight
November GMM
Warner Bros
November 14th, 2019
Thank you to Warner Bros., Amy Hilker and Robert Greenfield for their continued
support and again graciously hosting the November General Membership Meeting!

The always well-attended meeting was a great opportunity for members to catch-up and visit on the partied-up loading dock and throughout the prop house. The passed h'ors d'oerves and dessert table were delicious and the beverages plentiful.  All enjoyed President Kimberly Wannop's always-entertaining member interviews and Gene's prize raffle. The evening also saw the incoming Board of Directors announced and kicked-off the annual SDSA Spark of Love Toy Drive, filling two collection boxes to overflowing!

Thank you to everyone at the Warner Bros. Property Department, and to
 the SDSA Business Members who contributed to this event;

In a Few Words...

Which talent would you most like to have?
Chess Grandmaster. I started playing Chess about 5 years ago, as a way to bond with my son, who is an active player.  Ever since I started playing, I always dress in a chess board some where on a job. Chess serves as a great escape from the insanity of the work a Set Decorator does.

What do you consider your greatest achievement?
Convincing my wife to say yes, Our two amazingly talented and funny kids. Work wise….moving to New York City from New Orleans, and becoming an established Set Decorator. What do they say? If you can make it here (NY) you can make it anywhere? It has been a long, steady journey where I have honed the skills that I now use everyday.

Which word or phrase do you most overuse?
the thing is…”  “Cool,” “Awesome,” “Overbudget?” “Do you play Chess?” and  “Do we have to clear that? That is ridonculous”

What do you look for on the Craft Services table?
Any food that is wrapped. I have witnessed too many folks digging their hands into the nuts!  Truthfully, if I am at Craft Services, it means I am on a shooting set, and if I am on a shooting set (other then to open it),then there is trouble brewing…I love working in the film industry, I love being a Set Decorator, I am not a fan of being on set.

Please name a benefit of being an SDSA member.
The craft of Set Decoration is often not understood, even by many of the people in the Film industry. SDSA does an exceptional job of educating the world as to what a Set Decorator does.

SDSA has fostered a fantastic community of peers. Having other decorators to reach out to about questions of sourcing or anything else that relates to the craft is wonderful.

“The Thing is….SDSA is Cool and Awesome, and Decorators who do not belong are Redonkulas. Do you want to play Chess?

Carl Dean Reed
Co-Founder Pacific Coast Arts

Carl got his start in the movie industry as a prop maker. A few years later he switched to a property position in the electrical fixtures department at 20th Century Fox Studios. He was eventually promoted to foreman of that department. 20 years later, Carl decided he wanted a change so he pursued set dressing and became a very sought after lead person until he retired at 65 years of age in 1997.  Carl then helped his daughter, Joy Roy, open Pacific Coast Arts featuring fine art by his late father-in-law Stan Johnson.

A Celebration of Life was held on December 7th, 2019 in Simi Valley. More information can be found on the SDSA website in Press/News
