In this issue: Catch The Buzz! The 100th Issue!
Award Season begins, Members in the news and Gia Grosso in the Set Decorator Spotlight
Welcome to the 100th Issue of The Buzz!
It started as a suggestion during a committee meeting, that we really could use a newsletter to keep members in-the-know and connected. Be careful what you suggest around this group, because before you know it, you'll be heading-up that 'suggestion!'
The first issue of The Buzz landed in email in-boxes on September 11, 2013, and here we are on February 10th, 2021 celebrating the 100th issue! Thank you to the readers. And a very heartfelt thank you to all who have contributed to and supported this effort. To the vigilant proof-readers, information providers, spotlight participants and loyal advertisers, thank you! It really does take a crew and you'll find the very best at the SDSA!
This 100th issue is jam-packed, so without further adieu, here is The Buzz!
The 2021 Awards Season has officially begun!
Congratulations to all of the nominees!

Universal Studios
January's GMM host, Universal Studios Art Departments set a high bar with a live virtual visit to the prop house for a Mixology Experience!
SDSA Executive Director Gene Cane joined our hosts Prop Dept. Director Beverly Hadley,
Marketing & Events executive Krista Bolling, and in true virtual fashion, Universal Senior VP Production Services Jaime Crosby Zoomed in.
To the delight of all, professional Mixologist, Oliver, walked attendees through the personal cocktail kit which had been sent ahead to registered participants, and then prepared the drink for us offering insight and options to the well-crafted cocktail of the evening, the very delicious Paloma! Cheers!
Natalie Contreras, chair of the Educational Outreach Committee, gave us a preview of the next Day With the Set Decorator event, A Day with the Walking Dead. Set Decorator Gia Grosso starred in the first video promo, and will be leading the set tour and Q&A chat on February 27th.
Gene Serdena previewed the look of the inaugural SDSA Awards, celebrating the work of
Set Decorators and their colleagues for Best Achievement in Film. Nomination voting is now open. Access to digital packets were emailed to all SDSA members on February 8th.
(Check your in-box!) Nomination voting closes at Noon PST on February 26th, 2021. We’re so excited to launch this new event, the first of what we hope will become an annual feature that will expand to include other platforms, such as Television and Streaming ,in recognition of the extraordinary craftsmanship exhibited by our members and
Set Decoration and Design teams world-wide.
Thank you to Beverly, Krista and Jamie for hosting a fun and delicious, and lovely (yes, we noticed all of those beautifully staged vignettes!) meeting!
As always, thank you to our ringmaster extraordinaire, Mr. Gene Cane, and to our Events committee chair, Carol Bayne Kelly
An additional BIG thanks to the production team, JoAnn Vara, Chase Helzer and
Sebastian Ocampo.

announces the passing of these members
DARYN-REID GOODALL
It is with great sadness that the Set Decorators Society of America announces the death of longtime member Daryn-Reid Goodall, on Sunday January 17th in Los Angeles, after a brief hospitalization.
Daryn was a guiding light and driving force within the SDSA, leading many events and journeys. He was a 9-time Emmy nominee for his work on MADTV and served as President and Chairman of the Board, among many leadership roles. His talent for involving members in activities and committees, as well his energy, passion and love for the craft, made everyone who worked with him strive to be better. He was a great mentor, and many of those he mentored are working in the industry today. A skilled and enthusiastic organizer, he gave 100% to anything he worked on.
Daryn was compassionate and caring, funny and acerbic and always a quick wit. He will be missed by all of us who were privileged to know him.
A virtual Celebration of Life is set for Saturday, February 20th at Noon PST on Zoom. The link to log-on can be found on the SDSA Calendar.
More coverage and information about Daryn'a vast contributions and accomplishments, and how to contribute stories and photos to a Book of Life, that Daryn's family is creating can be found on the SDSA website
JOHN FORD
John Ford, the longtime General Manager of EC Prop Rentals, passed away on December 17, 2020.
He was an essential part of the EC Prop crew for over 17 years.
John was a great supporter of the SDSA and served on the Business Member Committee.
In 2014, he received an SDSA Chair Award in recognition of his service to the SDSA, along with his associates at EC Prop Rentals, Steve Andruszkewicz and Paul Andruszkewicz.
A kind and gentle person with a beautiful smile that lit up his face, he will be missed by all of us who knew him.
