Deeply immersed in shooting the second season of this series, Set Decorator Rebecca Alleway SDSA smiles, “ANDOR has been my life since 2019! It was a pleasure to talk with Rosemary about it, especially to be able to share aspects of the set decoration that, because of the scope, might be missed.”
She emphasizes, “70% of the dressing was designed, then manufactured...and then 30% was purchased to adapt to a really high level." To translate that beyond numbers, we’ve assembled a few concept images that Rebecca and team developed for set dressing elements.
There were literally hundreds of pieces designed and produced that then fit beautifully, seamlessly into the sets she and Luke, and their teams, created. Rebecca gives this shout out, "I would like to say thank you to my entire team, with special thanks to Corina Floyd, Helen Player, Sam Redwood, Darren Tubby, Keith Seymour and Tim Wildgoose."
Immersive, fully realized other worlds are a hallmark of the Star Wars cannon, and the rough and tumble planet Fennix meets that mark and goes beyond. We are pulled into the story, not only by the actors and the tale, but their environments as well. As a counterpoint, the crisp elegance of the Chandrilan Embassy and Luthen’s gallery of antiquities in high-end Coruscant are astounding and mesmerizing! And Eedy Karn’s retro-esque apartment will vibe any vintage ‘50s/60s space-age heart, while the character will make you wince and smile.
The Chandrilan Embassy...
“Luke and I were very much on the same page when it came to the embassy, we drew on the same inspiration and pulled from similar resources," Rebecca notes. "All Set Dec elements in this set were highly concepted and designed as it was a sophisticated space where everything needed weight and substance.”
“When considering the furniture designs, it was very important to me that the pieces looked like they were carved from real Marble. Each furniture piece was made up of many elements which all had to be individually dipped in a marbling tank before they were assembled.”
“All of the lighting and upholstery were also on such a large scale that they had to be designed and manufactured from scratch. The Chandeliers, in particular, were designed and developed alongside a specialist lighting company to create these beautiful iconic pieces.”
Luthen’s Gallery...
“The gallery was among several Lockdown projects,” [Rebecca was well-involved with first stages of prep when the pandemic struck] “...with a huge amount of research completed before I committed to mood boards and designs. Luthen needed to feel as if he were a credible dealer in antiquities, and it was very important for me to convey that this was a highly curated and comprehensive collection of artefacts. The Star Wars Easter Eggs incorporated were also carefully chosen to sit comfortably within the rest of his collection.”
Eedy Karn’s Apartment... Eedy’s apartment was highly concepted. Set in middle Coruscant and purchased thirty years ago, it had a faded and slightly retro style, with the notion of the city having grown up around it. I completed most of the 3d Modelling and Set Dec concept work over lockdown. Inspiration was drawn from Ralph McQuarrie and the fantastic character of Eedy Karn.”
