DECORATIVE ARTS AND DESIGN

A single object can crystallize a designer's vision and express the spirit of the times. Design is an intrinsic part of the human experience and reflects values, ideals, and the realities of daily life. Ranging from ornate tea services to utilitarian wastebaskets, what we own, collect, and covet reflects how we identify ourselves and how we want to be perceived.

This exhibition surveys the career of the preeminent Dada and Surrealist artist Max Ernst (French and American, born Germany. 1891–1976), with particular emphasis on his ceaseless experimentation. Ernst began his pursuit of radical new techniques that went "beyond painting" to articulate the irrational and unexplainable in the wake of World War I, continuing through the advent and aftermath of World War II. Featuring approximately 100 works drawn from the Museum’s collection, the exhibition includes paintings that challenged material and compositional conventions; collages and overpaintings utilizing found printed reproductions; frottages (rubbings); illustrated books and collage novels; sculptures of painted stone and bronze; and prints made using a range of techniques. Several major, multipart projects represent key moments in Ernst’s long career, ranging from early Dada and Surrealist portfolios of the late 1910s and 1920s to his late masterpiece—a recent acquisition to MoMA's collection—65 Maximiliana, ou l’exercice illégal de l’astronomie (1964). This illustrated book comprises 34 aquatints complemented by imaginative typographic designs and a secret hieroglyphic script of the artist’s own invention.

Exhibition Overview

This retrospective will provide a comprehensive view of Vija Celmins's career through a selection of approximately 120 works—from her earliest paintings made in Los Angeles in the 1960s to objects completed in New York in the last five years.

Throughout an accomplished career that spans more than fifty years, Celmins has sustained a practice of deep focus and extraordinary skill in a wide range of media. Celmins bases her exquisitely wrought paintings, sculpture, drawings, and prints on the world around us—sometimes through direct observation, but more often mediated by photography. Whether her sources are quotidian objects from her first studio in Venice, California, photographs of the Pacific Ocean taken at the local pier, or reproductions from newspapers, magazines, scientific exploration and inquiry, the resulting work possesses a magical verisimilitude.

Macao Film Festival On Track for 2020 Edition in December
Variety

The fifth annual International Film Festival and Awards Macao (IFFAM) is set to take place Dec. 3-8, with online submissions opening June 15.

In a year when the coronavirus pandemic has shut down numerous film festivals and left cinemas shuttered worldwide, the theme for this year’s IFFAM will be “A Celebration of Life and the Big Screen.” The festival will feature a specially curated section devoted to “films that define the out-of-home ‘big screen’ experience,” it said in a statement.

“It has been heartbreaking to see cinemas around the world closed this year, so IFFAM would like to celebrate the return to cinemas and the joy of this beautiful communal experience,” said IFFAM artistic director Mike Goodridge. “We can’t wait to see Macao audiences getting back into theaters.”

Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes, president of IFFAM’s organizing committee and director of the Macao Government Tourism Office, acknowledged that COVID-19 “has created a sweeping global impact and posed new barriers among people.”

“In these times of adversity, our hope is kindled as the film industry never ceases moving forward with perseverance,” she said.

Located a ferry ride away from Hong Kong, the former Portuguese colony of Macao is a special administrative region of China, meaning that it doesn’t fall under the same strict censorship rules as the mainland.

Last year, top prizes in the international section went to Kirill Mikhanovsky’s “Give Me Liberty,” which won best picture, and “Lynn + Lucy,” which nabbed best director for Britain’s Fyzal Boulifa and best actress for Roxanne Scrimshaw.

Best picture in the new Chinese cinema competition went to Gu Xiaogang’s “Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains,” while best director went to Singaporean Anthony Chen for his second feature, “Wet Season.”

In 2019, Juliette Binoche was tapped as the festival’s talent ambassador, and took the stage to present the Asian Blockbuster Film award to Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite,” which his producer accepted on his behalf.

Other major Chinese international film festivals have been indefinitely postponed so far this year, including April’s Beijing International Film Festival and June’s Shanghai International Film Festival.

October
Thursday, October 21st - Sunday, October 24th
WESTEDGE DESIGN FAIR - we are planning for our 8th edition of WestEdge next year, October 21-24, 2021.

As the COVID-19 virus changes our daily lives and affects communities around the world, we extend our well wishes and support to you all, as we all adapt to this new reality of increased health & safety precautions, ‘social distancing’, and ongoing concerns about the pandemic’s economic impact.

Amidst this pandemic, we have determined that the challenges of hosting the 2020 edition of WestEdge this October are proving insurmountable and therefore we will be canceling our annual event. After much consideration and consultation with City & State and Health authorities here in Southern California, it’s clear that the circumstances are too unpredictable to proceed with our physical event this year. The health and safety considerations of our valued partners, as well as our own team, are paramount.

While it’s heartbreaking to know that we will not see you in person this fall in Santa Monica, we are planning for our 8th edition of WestEdge next year, October 21-24, 2021. In the meantime, over the course of the next few months we’ll be continuing to expand our digital initiatives to ensure we’re providing our network with critical exposure to stay engaged and keep the design community connected and inspired. Stay tuned for more updates on those opportunities
